Tang Yuan
Few days before Christmas, everyone was busy buying ingredients for Tang Yuan Day.
Tang Yuan, a sort of dessert made by glutinous rice flour, comes with varieties of colors.
Depending on the person making it, those who still hang on to the tradition still choose to use natural ingredients over colorings.

Tang Yuan (the dessert) has a similar pronunciation to Tuan Yuan (a reunion) in Chinese which has the meaning of having a group of people reunited happily.

團 (tuan): means a group

圓 (yuan): means to reunite, a reunion

According to some information that I found, Tang Yuan is made round shaped because it is believed that everything will go smoothly, sweet and round without any conflict, representing a balanced harmonious life.
It is also this day that this dessert will be savored as a complete family.

Though this time round, we were not able to celebrate together eating Tang Yuan (due to grandpapa's memorial ceremony) in our hometown, but I managed to make them today.

I am a Super Big Fan of 고구마 (sweet potato), thus, its sweet potato Tang Yuan that I made today.

Though it might not look scrumptiously appealing, it sure does taste good (provided you have the peanut filling inside. Not for me though, I am no big fan of both peanut and sugar :p )

Sweet Potato Tang Yuan Recipe :

For the dough :
300g mashed sweet potato
180g glutinous flour
2tbsp sugar
50g tapioca starch
150 ~ 200ml water (depending on your sweet potato)

1. Skin the sweet potato.

2. Cut them into small pieces, as it reduces the time for it to be cooked.

3. Boil over high heat.

4. Once they are soft, remove them and mash !!

5. Get your flours ready.

6. Mix all the ingredients in. Sweet potato, flours, sugar and water.

7. Add in water only when you thin its necessary. The dough should not be neither too dry nor too wet. Leave it to rest for about an hour.

8. To cook the soup, just add water, pandan leaves, ginger and brown sugar. Put it to boil. On the other hand, have another wok to boil Tang Yuan, when its cooked, it will float. Scoop Tang Yuan, add in your ginger soup and serve.

Make it into different shapes and sizes, colors too if you have the time.
Do it with family or friends as the process does make you feel happy.

Remember to spend more time eating with your family and relatives no matter how busy or how far of a distance you are.
